7/14/2008 World Class Bluefin fishing with some of the biggest tuna

2008-07-14

Yesterday (Sunday) we experienced one of the best days ever on some of the biggest, baddest bluefins I have seen in our local waters in some years. There were a good number of bluefin in the 65-68 inch range going over 150 lbs and one was caught today that was 71 inches, which would be over 200 lbs, by the boat right next to us after at least a hour and half fight or longer. We caught tuna today in the 55 inch range and bigger and had at least 12 tuna bites by 9:00 am with almost all coming on jigs. After about 9:00 am the fish seemed to get much bigger than the 90-100 lb class we had been catching from daybreak on and sardines were the bait of choice. It really was world class bluefin tuna fishing today for all of us that were out there and that means everyone. On (Saturday) we had a great trip with two on at a time but mostly fish around 50-80 lbs but today we could not find a tuna under 47 inches and that also held true for all fishing around us. Today was as good as I have seen it in many years and it was just flat out awesome for all that fished in the general area we were at. The big tuna took us around the boat a few times with every bit of 22 lbs of drag or more. We just could not stop them from running forward.
